AI + comics: art or chaos?
A talk on the intersection of AI and comics
In this 40‑minute talk I’ll take you under the hood of the algorithms that promise to conjure comics out of thin air. We’ll jump from a simple linear formula (yes, y = a·x + b) to the brilliant world of GANs that learn to draw panels from Kinky & Cosy and transformers that colour Jommeke.
Mathematics is interspersed with jokes, and I’ll demonstrate live how to train a single neuron, what an algorithm really is, and why generating a full‑blown comic is still just beyond today’s technology. With slides, short animations and stop‑motion clips I’ll visualise the experiments—from a GAN training run to a coloured gag rendered in seconds.
And now the big question…
Imagine we actually break that barrier. If a machine can produce a complete, narrative comic, our definition of creativity shifts dramatically. Does an algorithm become an artist, or does it remain merely a tool translating our ideas? And who wants to read a comic written entirely by a machine—will we miss the charm of hand‑drawn panels, or discover a new kind of humour that only a digital brain can devise?
This talk blends geek culture, science and pure fun: deep technical insights (GANs, transformers, neural networks) with the light‑hearted, visual world of comics—a medium that every nerd holds dear. Love formulas, code and pop‑culture references? Then this mix of maths, humour and familiar comic heroes is right up your alley. The interactive demo style (live training, animations, stop‑motion) guarantees the energy and “wow” factor you’re looking for!

Testimonials
I think the success of the session can be measured with the satisfaction of the participants that was evident in their interest and engagement. Not only it was impressive to learn about your work, but you managed to appeal to the inner child in every individual and awaken their curiosity, creativity and playfulness. (Global Maritime Forum 2025 - Antwerpen)
What a good, clear and concise story you had to offer us. (...) It was exactly the message I was hoping for: AI is here to stay, this is how it works and this is how you could use it in the creative process: as a tool, as a time-saver. (StripMakersDagen 2025 - Helmond)
